The Perfect Touch Clawhammer / Frailing PickThe Perfect Touch Clawhammer Pick was born of necessity. The necessity of perserving the fingernails of the clawhammer picker. The Perfect Touch Clawhammer Pick is as radically innovative as the Perfect Touch Finger Picks. This pick is designed to be worn over the fingernail, with the tab resting against the fingertip.When putting on the pick, turn the finger 90 degrees, as if the finger is pointing, then gently turn the pick until it is resting over the fingernail. A few clawhammer pickers are blessed with tough fingernails. But those who are not can suffer painful chips and breaks during lengthy performances. Designed to be worn with the first wrap near the first knuckle, the pick employs a tab that is designed to rest against the fingertip, which gives rock-solid stabilization to the pick. A Metal Finger Pick for Clawhammer Banjo Players by Phil Sparks Recently, while jamming in Pegram, I ran into a friendly chap named Rusty Thornhill. Rusty, it turns out, has invented a metal finger pick designed specifically for old-time banjo players. My initial reaction was one of skepticism, but I agreed to give it a try. The first pick I tried was the wrong shape and the wrong size, so Rusty pulled out another one. The second pick was the right length (a smidgen longer than my fingernail) and fit perfectly. I played with the pick for a while and liked the clear, crisp sound. I told Rusty I would have to take it home and use it for an hour or so to be totally comfortable with it, so he gave me the second pick and his card. Back home, I was surprised to discover that I felt absolutely at ease with the pick after playing for only 10 or 15 minutes. I still liked the sound, which improved when I added a plastic thumb pick to the mix. I wish I could show you a picture of the pick. I looks a little like one of those metal finger picks that Bluegrass banjo players use, but it is larger, goes on backwards (covering the nail), and has a small flange that goes from the tip of the pick down under the pad of the finger. Rusty is still perfecting his design and experimenting with different types of metal, but his picks should be on the market soon–for about $15 per pick. (Yes, I told him that the price is too high.) Most of us would prefer the sound of our own fingernails plunking out those old-time tunes, but if your fingernails are soft and fragile, these picks may be just what you need. I’ll be taking my picks to Mt Airy and Clifftop, where I often destroy my fingernail after about two days of constant picking. |

CRADLE STYLE STRAPS
A cradle style strap is one that supports the banjo from the bottom, the banjo resting in the strap as one would cradle a baby, instead of dangling from hooks which can damage the edge of the resonator on heavier, nicer instruments. Another fault of hook-style attachments: if the bracket the strap is attached to becomes loose, the banjo could crash to the floor. The cradle style strap attachment is vastly superior because it is more secure and has no metal parts in contact with the wood parts of the banjo. The strap ends are fed under the brackets until a designated bracket is selected for attachment. Then the strap end is looped over the bracket and is attached to itself with special screw fittings (shoestring or leather lace can also be used). The length of the strap (how far down the banjo hangs) is determined by which brackets are chosen to attach the strap ends. (The Hillbillys strap also features an adjustment that involves holes in the strap which the ends are fed through .The higher you want the banjo to rest, the closer the strap ends are to each other under the banjo.
Special screws are used to secure the strap ends. Lace or string can also be used.
